2014 Chancellor's Council Dinner

We heard it through the grapevine that the Chancellor’s Council celebrated “15 Years of Giving” at the annual Chancellor’s Council dinner on March 14, 2014. Guests were treated to a medley of Motown’s greatest hits, in a production that featured LSU students in association with the LSU Department of Theatre. Chancellor Jack Weiss brought down the house when he sang “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” and danced with the Motown performers. Established in 1999, the Chancellor’s Council began with 149 members. Today, the Council is over 330 members strong.

2013 Distinguished Alumnus & Distinguished Achievement

The LSU Law Center honored Vice Chancellor Cheney C. Joseph, Jr. (’69) as the 2013 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year and the Honorable Stanwood R. Duval, Jr. (‘66), Richard F. “Dick” Knight (’58), Marilyn C. Maloney (’75) and Michael A. Patterson (’71) for Distinguished Achievement at an awards dinner on November 1, 2013 at the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center. Guests enjoyed video tributes of each honoree. A highlight of the event was a “roast” of Distinguished Alumnus Cheney Joseph by LSU Law Center Chancellor Jack Weiss, and longtime friends and colleagues, Professor Bill Corbett and Charles McCowan.

Liskow & Lewis Visiting Professorship in Energy Law Gift Announcement and Lecture

LSU Law Center Chancellor Jack M. Weiss has announced the creation of the Liskow & Lewis Visiting Professorship in Energy Law, an endowment established through a $200,000 gift by the Liskow & Lewis law firm. The Professorship provides funds to bring distinguished scholars in energy law and closely related fields to the Law Center on an annual basis as part of the LSU John P. Laborde Energy Law Center. The gift was in response to the Law Center’s desire to create an interdisciplinary, 21st century Energy Law program that will prepare today’s graduates for the complex world of energy law practice.Professor Hannah Jacobs Wiseman, a rising star in the field of energy law, delivered the inaugural lecture for the Liskow & Lewis Visiting Professorship in Energy Law series. The lecture, “Enhancing Sub-Federal Renewable and Fossil Energy Governance,” took place on October 10 at the Law Center.

2013 Class Reunions

LSU Law graduates from the classes of 1973, 1983, 1993, 2003 and 2008, celebrated their respective class reunions on Friday, September 6. The day began with a CLE featuring Paul Barrett, author, attorney, and assistant managing editor of Bloomberg Businessweek, who presented "The Law of the Jungle: The Perils of Complex Litigation." Friday evening, the graduates gathered at the Louisiana State Museum to reminisce with classmates and professors. The weekend was topped off with the All-Alumni Tailgate on Saturday, September 7.

Dinner Honoring John P. Laborde ('49)

The LSU Law Center community, along with family and friends, honored alumnus John P. Laborde (’49) on Thursday, May 2, 2013 for his historic gift to the Law Center with a dinner at the Audubon Tea Room. Mr. Laborde has made a $2 Million gift to the Law Center to create a $1.2 Million Double Endowed Chair in Energy Law and an $800,000 programmatic support fund to establish the LSU John P. Laborde Energy Law Center. Mr. Laborde’s gift is the largest gift in the history of the Law Center. In October 2012, the LSU Board of Supervisors approved naming of the Energy Law Center of the LSU Law Center in honor of Mr. Laborde.

2013 Chancellor's Council Dinner

At this year’s Chancellor Council Dinner, the Law Center paid tribute to decades of Law Center graduates who have valiantly and faithfully served our nation.A highlight of the evening was the viewing of a Louisiana Public Broadcasting/Law Center-produced video tribute to our veterans. Featured in the video are seven outstanding LSU Law graduates: John P. Laborde (’49), Honorable Thomas Stagg (’49), William Meyers (’48), W. Arthur Abercrombie (’69), Norma Bennett (’00), David LaCerte (’08), and Lauren Wolfe (’12). Sadly, Mr. Meyers passed away on February 22, 2013 not long after the taping of the video. The National World War II Museum’s charming vocal trio, the Victory Belles, took the crowd on a nostalgic journey through World War II-era musical classics.

Preis & Roy Gift Announcement

LSU Law Center Chancellor Jack M. Weiss announced on November 1 the creation of The Preis and Roy Director of Advocacy and Professional Practice Endowed Professorship, an endowment established through a $250,000 gift by the Preis and Roy law firm. The endowed professorship gift will support the director of the Law Center’s Advocacy and Professional Practice program, a position responsible for the activities of the Law Center’s 27 Trial Advocacy and Moot Court teams and its externship program, and provide funds to support the activities of the program. The Preis and Roy law firm’s gift is the largest, one-time law firm gift ever to be received by the Law Center.

The LSU Law Center honored W. Henson Moore III as the 2012 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year and the Honorable Elizabeth Foote, Honorable Bonnie Foster Jackson, C. Kris Kirkpatrick, William Morrison Meyers and R. Patrick Vance for Distinguished Achievement at an awards brunch on Saturday, October 20 at Nottoway Plantation in White Castle, Louisiana.

2012 Hats-n-Canes & All-Alumni Tailgate

Rain couldn't dampen the spirit of the Class of 2013 as they continued the LSU Law tradition of the annual Hats-n-Canes celebration on Saturday, September 29. Sporting black top hats and carrying black canes, the graduating class gathered in the rain on the front steps of the old Law Building as Chancellor Jack Weiss toasted the class using the cane of the Law School's first dean, Joseph Kelly. 3L President Josh Wood had the distinct honor of presenting the cane to Chancellor Weiss.

The LSU Law Center welcomed U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and Michelle Shamblin Stratton, the Law Center's first-ever U.S. Supreme Court Clerk, to the campus on September 6 and 7 for two busy days of educational events. The agenda for the Justice and Ms. Shamblin included student forums, classroom teaching, and meetings with students, leaders of student organizations, and the faculty.

LSU Law Center Scholarship Reception, April 14, 2011

On April 14, 2011, Chancellor Jack Weiss welcomed 130 scholarship donors and student scholarship recipients to the Faculty Club. The annual event honors those who helped fund scholarships at the Law Center, and the students who have benefited from that generosity. The reception also provides the Law Center an opportunity to say "thank you" to our donors, and, of course, to acknowledge our wonderful students. Chancellor Weiss also recognized the generous donors who have recently established scholarships. Some 27 new endowed and annual scholarships have been established since our last reception in 2009. Thank you to all who attended this lovely event, and for your support of the LSU Law Center Scholarship Programs.

Nesser Family Endowed Chair in Energy Law Gift Announcement

March 25, 2011 - Baton Rouge Chancellor Jack M. Weiss announced today a gift from the John T. Nesser Family to establish the Nesser Family Endowed Chair in Energy Law. LSU Law Center alumni John T. Nesser III, J.T. Nesser IV, and Amanda Nesser Moeller established the endowed chair through a gift to the LSU Law Center's Forever LSU campaign. The Nessers' gift is the largest philanthropic gift the Law Center has ever received from a living donor and only the second endowed chair in the Center's history. It will support a major new initiative, allowing the LSU Law Center to broadly expand its already strong program in traditional oil, gas and mineral law into the vastly expanded field of 21st century energy law.

The annual Chancellor's Council dinner was held at the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center on March 25, 2011. This event recognizes alumni and friends who have given unrestricted gifts of $1000 or more to teh Law Center. The Council and the Law Center also use the occassion to thank and acknowledge major gift donors to the Law Center. Annual contributions from Chancellor's Council members are used to support a variety of student and faculty activities, academic programs and alumni services. Student financial aid, facility and technology improvements, as well as other initiatives that enhance the standing of LSU Law, would not be possible without the generosity of our Chancellor's Council members and major gift donors. Six retiring LSU Law faculty members were honored during the dinner. Those faculty members honored were Howard L'Enfant, Frank Maraist, Patrick Martin, Warren Mengis, Kenneth Murchison and Katherine Spaht. Video tributes documented their outstanding service and careers. These professors have made remarkable impressions on many students' and colleagues' lives over the years, and they will be missed. On behalf of the Chancellor's Council and the Law Center, we wish them well in their future endeavors.

2009 Les Avocats Luncheon

Graduates of "51 Years or Better" gathered for a lunch and reception on May 29, 2009. Dave Langford ('49) said his looks hadn't changed from his time as a student until today. Alvin Gibson ('49) remembered exams as being the worst thing about school, and Ed Lancaster ('48) said his most vivid memory of law school was Harriet "Ma" Daggett and the "weasel words" she taught them. For the uninitiated, "weasel words" are words that lawyers need to learn to weasel out of situations.

Chancellor Weiss recently hosted the annual LSU Law Scholarship Reception at the Faculty Club. More than 100 privately-funded scholarships were represented by students, firms, LSU Law alumni, and memorial scholarship family members and friends. Guests were treated to the musical talents of Brianna Guerin (LSU Law '08) on the piano, and photo ops with Mike the Tiger, who dropped in for a visit. Scholarships funded by the financial contributions of alumni and friends of LSU Law make a lasting impact on the lives of students. The LSU Law Center deeply appreciates these contributions that make it possible to pursue excellence in legal education.

Monroe Hosts Welcoming Reception

LSU Law alumni hosted a welcoming reception on Thursday, October 18 in Monroe, Louisiana for Chancellor Jack Weiss. Held at the Lotus Club, the event drew a large crowd of grads from the northeast region of the state. The reception was organized by Thomas M. Hayes III, Chair of the Northeast Louisiana steering committee for the 'Tradition of Excellence—The Campaign for LSU Law.' Shreveport Bar Members Meet New LSU Law Chancellor

More than 60 Shreveport area bench and bar members gathered at a reception on Thursday, September 13 to meet the new Chancellor of the LSU Law Center, Jack Weiss. The event, held at the University Club, kicks off 'A Tradition of Excellence-the Campaign for LSU Law'. Part of the 'Forever LSU' campaign, it is an unprecedented fundraising effort by which LSU Law Center alumni intend to raise $28 million to underwrite scholarships and additions to the law curriculum. Campaign efforts have realized close to $9 million thus far. Sam Gregorio, Chair of the Northwest Louisiana Steering Committee, organized the event.
