Rain couldn't dampen the spirit of the Class of 2013 as they continued the LSU Law tradition of the annual Hats-n-Canes celebration on Saturday, September 29. Sporting black top hats and carrying black canes, the graduating class gathered in the rain on the front steps of the old Law Building as Chancellor Jack Weiss toasted the class using the cane of the Law School's first dean, Joseph Kelly. 3L President Josh Wood had the distinct honor of presenting the cane to Chancellor Weiss.

On April 14, 2011, Chancellor Jack Weiss welcomed 130 scholarship donors and student scholarship recipients to the Faculty Club. The annual event honors those who helped fund scholarships at the Law Center, and the students who have benefited from that generosity. The reception also provides the Law Center an opportunity to say "thank you" to our donors, and, of course, to acknowledge our wonderful students. Chancellor Weiss also recognized the generous donors who have recently established scholarships. Some 27 new endowed and annual scholarships have been established since our last reception in 2009. Thank you to all who attended this lovely event, and for your support of the LSU Law Center Scholarship Programs.

March 25, 2011 - Baton Rouge Chancellor Jack M. Weiss announced today a gift from the John T. Nesser Family to establish the Nesser Family Endowed Chair in Energy Law. LSU Law Center alumni John T. Nesser III, J.T. Nesser IV, and Amanda Nesser Moeller established the endowed chair through a gift to the LSU Law Center's Forever LSU campaign. The Nessers' gift is the largest philanthropic gift the Law Center has ever received from a living donor and only the second endowed chair in the Center's history. It will support a major new initiative, allowing the LSU Law Center to broadly expand its already strong program in traditional oil, gas and mineral law into the vastly expanded field of 21st century energy law.

The annual Chancellor's Council dinner was held at the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center on March 25, 2011. This event recognizes alumni and friends who have given unrestricted gifts of $1000 or more to teh Law Center. The Council and the Law Center also use the occassion to thank and acknowledge major gift donors to the Law Center. Annual contributions from Chancellor's Council members are used to support a variety of student and faculty activities, academic programs and alumni services. Student financial aid, facility and technology improvements, as well as other initiatives that enhance the standing of LSU Law, would not be possible without the generosity of our Chancellor's Council members and major gift donors. Six retiring LSU Law faculty members were honored during the dinner. Those faculty members honored were Howard L'Enfant, Frank Maraist, Patrick Martin, Warren Mengis, Kenneth Murchison and Katherine Spaht. Video tributes documented their outstanding service and careers. These professors have made remarkable impressions on many students' and colleagues' lives over the years, and they will be missed. On behalf of the Chancellor's Council and the Law Center, we wish them well in their future endeavors.

Chancellor Weiss recently hosted the annual LSU Law Scholarship Reception at the Faculty Club. More than 100 privately-funded scholarships were represented by students, firms, LSU Law alumni, and memorial scholarship family members and friends. Guests were treated to the musical talents of Brianna Guerin (LSU Law '08) on the piano, and photo ops with Mike the Tiger, who dropped in for a visit. Scholarships funded by the financial contributions of alumni and friends of LSU Law make a lasting impact on the lives of students. The LSU Law Center deeply appreciates these contributions that make it possible to pursue excellence in legal education.
