LSU Law Center’s ABA Arbitration Team Wins Regional Championship

Taking First Place at the ABA Arbitration Regional Competition on November 16 and 17, was the Law Center’s Arbitration “Purple” Team of Deanna Candler, Anna Grand, Justin Hall, and Leigh Hill.  The Purple team advanced to the national championships of the Arbitration Competition, which will be held at the ABA’s headquarters in Chicago in January 2014.  LSU Law students Nicholas Antaki, Breanna Green, Philip Prejean, and Leah Scott with the “Gold” team advanced as one of the top four teams in the competition to the Semifinal Round.  The LSU Law Center’s Advocacy Programs hosted the regional competition which was held at the LSU Law Center.

Over one hundred teams from law schools across the United States competed in regional rounds of the competition for one of twelve spots in the national finals.  Twelve teams fielded by Emory University School of Law, the LSU Law Center, Cumberland School of Law at Samford University, Texas A&M University School of Law, South Texas College of Law, Mississippi College School of Law, and the University of Florida Levin College of Law competed in the Louisiana regional rounds of the Arbitration Competition.

The American Bar Association’s Arbitration Competition gives students at law schools around the country the opportunity to gain experience in alternative dispute resolution by engaging in a mock commercial arbitration.  This year’s students presented their clients’ positions in a fictional real estate transaction dispute to arbitral panels composed of experienced attorneys.  Students presented opening arguments, called and examined witnesses, made evidentiary presentations, and presented summations to the panels.

The Advocacy Programs extend thanks to the many LSU Law Center alumni and faculty who gave of their time to serve as volunteer arbitrator-judges!
